Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxin A) is a prescription medication that is injected into muscles and is used to improve the look of moderate to severe fine lines for a short period of time. Botox® Cosmetic blocks the nerve impulses to the targeted muscles, relaxing the muscle allowing the overlying skin to flatten, smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles.

Everyone develops lines and wrinkles over time, but genetic influences mean some people may develop wrinkles sooner, or are affected by fine lines more severely. Other factors hasten aging too, such as overexposing your skin to the sun and poor lifestyle issues such as smoking, excess alcohol consumption, and a poor diet.

Botox® Cosmetic and other injectables such as Xeomin® and Dysport® are all derivatives of the botulinum toxin, which has been in use for over 30 years as a cosmetic therapy. Botox® Cosmetic and other injectable treatments help remedy these problems in a simple, cost-effective way with no downtime and no recovery needed.

How does Botox Reduce Lines and Wrinkles?

Botox® Cosmetic contains an extract of the botulinum toxin (onabotulinumtoxin A) that interferes with chemical signals sent between your facial nerves and the muscles they control. If the chemical signals can’t get through to the muscles, they relax and soften, thereby smoothing out the creases, fine lines and wrinkles formed from aging and repeated facial expressions.

Botox® Cosmetic works particularly well on areas of the face where lines appear from repetitive facial expressions, including for example:

  • Glabellar lines between your eyebrows
  • Crow’s feet at the corners of your eyes
  • Forehead lines

These areas are prone to developing deeper creases than the rest of your face.

What is a Botox Treatment Session Like?

The physicians at Greenwich Health have exceptional skills with certifications in administering Botox treatment for chronic migraines and Botox® Cosmetic treatment for fine lines and wrinkles. For cosmetic treatment, each Botox® Cosmetic session should be quick enough to fit into your lunch break.

The procedure is performed outpatient without any special precautions after treatment.  One treatment can achieve significant results, and you are able to carry on with your day post-procedure. Results become apparent within 24-48 hours up to the first week that can last for up to four months. If you want to maintain your appearance, it’s recommended to return for treatments every 3-4 months.
